Three Technologies That Made the Web Possible

The World Wide Web was built using three important technologies that are still used today.

HTML (HyperText Markup Language)

  • HTML is the language used to create the structure of a web page. It tells a web browser where headings, paragraphs, images, tables, and links should appear. Every website on the internet still uses HTML in some form.

HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol)

  • HTTP is the communication protocol that allows web browsers and web servers to exchange web pages. When you request a webpage, your browser sends an HTTP request to a web server.
  • The server responds by sending back the webpage. Today, most websites use HTTPS, which is the secure version of HTTP.

URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

  • A URL is the address of a webpage.
  • For example: https://example.com/about
  • The URL tells the browser where the webpage is located so it can request it from the correct web server.
  • Every webpage on the World Wide Web has its own URL.
The Power of Hyperlinks

One of the Web's biggest innovations was the hyperlink. A hyperlink is a clickable reference that connects one webpage to another.

Instead of typing commands or searching manually, users could simply click a link to move between related pages.

This made finding information much faster and easier. Hyperlinks turned millions of individual pages into one enormous interconnected collection of information.

Why the Web Was Revolutionary

The World Wide Web made the internet much easier for ordinary people to use. People no longer needed to memorize commands.

Information could include text, images, and later audio and video. Documents became connected through clickable links.

Anyone could publish information that people around the world could access. These improvements made the internet far more useful and accessible than before.

The Growth of the Web

When the first website appeared in 1991, there were only a handful of websites.

Even if the World Wide Web did not exist, these other internet services could still operate.
