Computer Networks and the Internet: Connecting Computers Around the World

In the previous article, we explored how personal computers became easier to use through operating systems and graphical user interfaces. By the late 1980s, millions of people owned computers for work, education, and personal use.

However, there was one major limitation.

Most computers worked independently.

If you wanted to share a file with someone else, you often had to copy it onto a floppy disk or another storage device and physically carry it to another computer.

As the number of computers increased, people began searching for ways to connect them together so they could share information and resources more efficiently.

This led to the development of computer networks and eventually the Internet.

What Is a Computer Network?

A computer network is a group of computers and other devices connected together so they can exchange data and share resources.

Instead of working independently, connected computers can communicate with one another almost instantly.

A network allows users to:

  • Share files.
  • Share printers and other hardware.
  • Exchange messages.
  • Access shared storage.
  • Communicate over long distances.
  • Access information stored on other computers.

Today, networks are used everywhere, from homes and schools to businesses and data centers.

Local Area Networks (LAN)

One of the earliest and most common types of computer networks is the Local Area Network, commonly called a LAN.

A LAN connects computers within a relatively small area, such as:

  • A home.
  • A school.
  • An office.
  • A university campus.

In a LAN, computers can quickly share files, printers, and internet connections.

Most modern home Wi-Fi networks are examples of Local Area Networks.

Wide Area Networks (WAN)

As organizations expanded, they needed to connect computers located in different cities or even different countries.

This led to the development of Wide Area Networks, or WANs.

Unlike a LAN, which covers a small area, a WAN connects multiple local networks over much larger distances.

The largest WAN in the world is the Internet itself.

Early Computer Networking

During the 1960s, researchers began experimenting with ways to allow computers to communicate electronically.

One of the first major networking projects was ARPANET, developed with funding from the United States Department of Defense.

ARPANET connected computers located at different research institutions.

Its goal was to allow researchers to exchange information and make better use of expensive computing resources.

Although small by today's standards, ARPANET introduced many of the concepts that later became the foundation of the Internet.

The Development of TCP/IP

As more networks appeared, another challenge emerged.

Different networks often used different communication methods, making it difficult for them to exchange information.

To solve this problem, engineers developed a common set of communication rules known as TCP/IP.

TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol.

These protocols define how data is divided into smaller pieces called packets, transmitted across networks, and reassembled correctly at the destination.

In 1983, ARPANET officially adopted TCP/IP, a milestone that is widely regarded as the beginning of the modern Internet.

Even today, nearly every device connected to the Internet uses TCP/IP.

The Internet Begins to Grow

During the 1980s and early 1990s, universities, research organizations, governments, and businesses increasingly connected their networks together.

Instead of being one single computer network, the Internet became a global network of interconnected networks.

This allowed computers around the world to exchange information regardless of their manufacturer or operating system.

As networking technology improved, the Internet expanded rapidly.

Domain Names and DNS

Every device connected to the Internet has a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address.

Although computers can communicate using these numerical addresses, they are difficult for people to remember.

To make the Internet easier to use, the Domain Name System (DNS) was developed.

DNS translates human-readable domain names into IP addresses.

For example, instead of remembering a series of numbers, users can simply type a domain name into their browser, and DNS locates the correct server.

This system makes the Internet much easier for people to navigate.

The World Wide Web

Although the Internet already existed, it was still not easy for ordinary people to use.

In 1989, British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee proposed a system for sharing information using linked documents.

This system became known as the World Wide Web.

The World Wide Web introduced several technologies that remain fundamental today:

  • HTML for creating web pages.
  • HTTP for transferring web pages.
  • URLs for locating information on the web.

It is important to understand that the Internet and the World Wide Web are not the same thing.

The Internet is the global network that connects computers.

The World Wide Web is one of the many services that operates on top of the Internet.

Web Browsers

As the World Wide Web became more popular, software called web browsers allowed users to access websites using a graphical interface.

Instead of typing complex commands, users could simply click links to move between web pages.

Early browsers made the web much easier to use and encouraged millions of people to begin using the Internet.

Today, web browsers remain one of the primary ways people access online information.

Search Engines

As the number of websites grew into the millions, finding useful information became increasingly difficult.

Search engines were developed to organize the web and help users locate relevant information.

Instead of remembering the address of every website, users could search for keywords and receive a list of matching web pages.

Search engines have continued to evolve over the years and now use advanced ranking algorithms and artificial intelligence to provide more accurate and relevant results.

Broadband and Wi-Fi

During the early years of the Internet, many people connected using dial-up telephone connections, which were relatively slow.

Over time, broadband technologies such as DSL, cable internet, and fiber-optic connections greatly increased internet speeds.

Wireless networking also became more common through Wi-Fi, allowing laptops, smartphones, and other devices to connect without cables.

These improvements made the Internet faster, more reliable, and accessible to many more people.

How Networking Changed Computers

Networking transformed computers from standalone machines into connected devices.

Instead of storing information on only one computer, users could communicate, collaborate, and access information from almost anywhere.

Businesses could connect offices across the world.

Students could access educational resources online.

Researchers could collaborate internationally.

Families and friends could communicate instantly across continents.

Today, networking is considered one of the most important features of modern computing.

Why This Period Was Important

The development of computer networks and the Internet completely changed how computers were used.

Instead of being isolated machines, computers became part of a global communication system.

People could exchange information instantly, access knowledge from anywhere in the world, and collaborate across countries and continents.

The Internet also laid the foundation for online services such as email, web applications, e-commerce, online education, video streaming, cloud computing, and social media.

As Internet access became faster and more widespread, another major transformation began.

Computers no longer needed to store all programs and data locally.

Instead, applications, storage, and even computing power could be delivered over the Internet.

This new model became known as cloud computing.
